The destructive effects of victim blaming
The "rough sex" defence was outlawed on Monday 6 July 2020 in England and Wales. The amendment forms part of the new Domestic Abuse Bill, which is entering the Report Stage in the House of Commons. This is an important step for the justice system and for women who experience abuse, and we need to use it to shine a spotlight on the perturbing and all-too-familiar tendency to victim blame when a serious crime has been committed.
The ‘invisible’ pandemic – speaking out about Domestic Abuse
In 2020, we are not only facing a global crisis caused by the Coronavirus pandemic, but we continue to face a global issue when it comes to the attitudes towards domestic abuse. Richard Madeley’s irresponsible comments recently are just one symptom of a virus that has spread through our society for decades, centuries and millennia – that of ignorance and flippancy when it comes to issues of domestic abuse, and of attitudes towards victims and survivors.

Domestic abuse - it's Everybody's Business
Domestic abuse seems to be all around us at the moment. From celebrity issues, to the Duchess of Cornwall saying “Domestic abuse affects everybody” and Ian Wright’s deeply moving Desert Island discs in the run up to Valentine’s Day. Our CEO Deb celebrates the rise in stories but urges everyone to make it their business to be aware of domestic abuse and its impact.

When TV tackles domestic abuse – reviewing BBC’s Silent Witness
BBC’s Silent Witness tackled head on domestic violence and abuse (DVA). When TV attempts to present the reality of domestic abuse, it can often in fact misrepresent the issues and the trauma experience by victims. Our CEO Deb gives an account of how Silent Witness has successfully and sensitively cast an appropriate representation of the issues and trauma faced by women, and where there is still room for improvement.
Children do not ‘witness’ domestic abuse, they experience it…
Children do not 'witness' domestic abuse, they experience it… Yet we somehow keep imagining them as being passive in families where this abuse happens. They are not, they are living it. At Oasis, we’re dedicated to supporting children and young people from the ages of 0 through to 25 years and their families to heal, grow and move towards a positive future.
We're Kent Charity of the Year!
Earlier this year, we were awarded the prestigious title of Kent Charity of the Year. Our CEO Deborah Cartwright-Crossley explains the vital work we do that lies behind this recognition and examines the commitment and complexities of our service as we continue to strive every day to end violence and abuse against women and children.

Our CEO Deb shares how much determination and commitment there is for supporting women, but the significant and very real resourcing issues faced.
New statistics show scale of abuse against pets in domestic abuse cases in Kent
We often think that it’s only women and children that can be affected by domestic abuse, but all to often it extends to more than just people. Pets can become a prime means to coerce and control, using the emotional ties the victims feels towards their dog to ensure they don’t leave. New stats released by Oasis and Dogs Trust show the scale of abuse against pets in domestic abuse cases in Kent
