Our Impact

Oasis makes an everyday difference to the lives of those affected by domestic abuse. We are committed to creating a world free from abuse and this runs through everything we do, from prevention and education work to support services.

Our 25-year experience and exemplary work is demonstrated by what we achieve year on year.

At the front and centre of our work is a client-first, recovery-focused approach. We enable positive safe futures, with interventions for every step of the journey from crisis to trauma-recovery and lives lived free from abuse.

In 2021 we came together with sister organisation Choices Domestic Abuse Service to create an even stronger service across East Kent, Medway and North Kent.

Take a look at the wide-ranging impact that we’ve had.

2020-21

In 2020-21 we helped 785 people

  • 95% were female and 19% had a disability

  • 898 children belonged to these families

  • 38% experienced someone threatening to kill them and 15% needed to visit A&E or be hospitalised.

  • Nearly half of the people we helped had thoughts of suicide and 8% self-harmed to cope

376 adults exited our services with 229 felt a reduction in symptoms of trauma and anxiety

  • 60 perpetrators were removed from victims' homes

  • 67 people were supported through court and 131 with reporting to the police

  • 38 people started a new job

We supported 163 children

  • 65% were victims of emotional abuse, 36% had experienced physical abuse.

  • 51% showed a positive mental health outcome, 29% had improved relationship and social skills and 10% improved their attainment at school

  • 38% showed an improved confidence

We helped just over 50% of the children referred to us.

We do not receive statutory funding for our work with children and young people.

By supporting our work, you can help us to increase the number of young people we can help.

A SURVIVOR’S STORY

When Oasis opened its doors in 1994, two women a week were being murdered as a result of domestic abuse. This figure remains the same and our services are as vital as ever. Our mission is to increase safety for victims, rebuild lives and create lasting change, supporting them in refuge and on every step towards a safer future.

Love shouldn’t hurt

Starting a new life isn’t easy. Creating a safe life is even harder when you’re fleeing abuse. Our refuge is vital for building a safer future for every woman we help.

In their words…

ALINA’S STORY

Oasis supports survivors

The coercive, controlling behaviour of Alina’s partner was so extensive that it was hard to see the red flags, until taking part in Oasis’s recovery programme helped to make the invisible prison visible.

I’ve found the strength and determination to get my life back. I’ve realised that I matter. If I hadn’t been in touch with Oasis... I’m pretty sure I’d have taken him back

Oasis stories

Our impact can be seen in the voices of the people we work with. Take a look at what they have to say.

Sara’s story

Sara came to stay at the Oasis Refuge seven years ago, with her three young children. Since moving out she has gone from strength to strength, recently becoming a peer mentor.

Oasis has been like the Land of Opportunity. I am never looking back. I have told my family that Oasis is my ‘backbone’. Without it, I wouldn’t be able to get to where I am today
— Sara
