When Oliver dies of drug-related causes with his friend Charlie, the local authority seeks to review the circumstances. A genogram identifies multiple domestic abuse MARAC referrals, sexual exploitation and abuse, gang and substance misuse issues. In this network, there are24 children and 12 adults all linked together in a community fraught with risks.
In this one-day conference, we will look at the lives of Oliver, his former partner Jessica and their immediate children, family and friends to help us understand the impact of their life experiences, their community and the need to work as a system to tackle and prevent abuse.
The conference combines expert speakers and practical workshops that are suitable for any professional that comes into contact with people affected by abuse.
Keynote Speaker - Dr. Carlene Firmin MBE
Dr. Carlene Firmin MBE is a social policy researcher committed to generating evidence on inequality, social justice, and the protection of children and young people.
Currently senior research fellow at the University of Bedfordshire, she leads their work on peer-on-peer abuse and has developed frameworks to contextualise safeguarding policy and practice, supporting 11 local safeguarding children boards across England.
Carlene worked for eight years as a policy advisor influencing strategy and practice to safeguard young people, including as Assistant Director at Barnardo’s and the Principal Policy Advisor to the Office of the Children’s Commissioner Inquiry into Child Sexual Exploitation in Gangs and Groups. In 2011 Carlene received an MBE for services to Women and Girls' issues.

Sue Penna
Sue is the Creative Director and programme expert at Rock Pool Domestic Abuse Training and Consultancy Services.
She has specialised in writing psychoeducational programmes throughout her career.
Sue’s other programmes include the Domestic Abuse Adult and Children Recovery Tool Kit. This is nationally recognised by agencies as a significant tool enabling those that have experienced abuse to move forward with their lives.
Sue had worked closely with one of the countries leading domestic violence charities for 10 years, is passionate about the need for multi-agency working, upskilling all frontline practitioners and the need for safety first as the key factor in working with families where domestic violence and abuse is present.
Marius Raakil
Marius is the executive director of Alternativ til Vold (Alternative to Violence), the first European Professional treatment program for men being abusive in intimate relationships, opening in 1986. Today ATV runs treatment programs in 11 Norwegian cities, employing almost 50 professionals.
Marius is educated as a specialist in clinical psychology andhas 25 years of experience treating men who perpetrate domestic abuse. He is a lecturer and speaker both nationally and internationally and has worked as aresearcher and member of governmental committees on men, equality, and violence.
Zoe Lodrick
Zoe is a UKCP Registered Psychotherapist and an experienced Trainer and Consultant. She has over 22 years experience of providing psychotherapy to women and men who have experienced rape, sexual assault, and/or childhood sexual abuse.
Zoe provides training and consultation to professionals who work with victims/survivors of sexualised traumas (whether therapeutically or within the criminal justice system).
Zoe held the full-time position of Senior Practitioner at Portsmouth Area Rape Crisis Service (PARCS) from 1994 to 2009. Since April 2009, Zoe has been a self-employed Trainer and Consultant.

Who is this conference for?
This conference is for any professional who may come into contact with people experiencing abuse in the course of their work. Tickets for this conference are limited so first preference will be given to Thanet practitioners.
How many tickets can I book?
You can book a maximum of 5 tickets per organisation, if you'd like more tickets you can put these attendees on the waiting list.
Is my registration/ticket transferrable?
Yes, but please let us know if you can and be aware that there is a charge for non-attendance.
